“We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it.”
President Barack Obama
The environmental crisis before us.
Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.” - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
This has led to frightening, large-scale changes in our community.
For example, our world is getting hotter, and in Hot-lanta, it’s easy to see.
Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months.
Our oceans are absorbing a vast majority of that heat. Due to rising sea temperatures, we’ve lost half of the Great Barrier Reef, a structure built over millennia, within a matter of years.
And in our communities across the country, we’re feeling the burden.
- North Carolina - Florence
- The West - massive wildfires this summer
- Atlanta, GA - air pollution so bad children can't
And larger-than-life disasters deserve larger-than-life solutions.
We’re all our OWN superheroes and we’re in it together.
The same thought was expressed over a century ago in timeless language by the Native American Chief Seattle, who said, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors—we borrow it from our children.”
